Malaysia is facing scarcity of land for affordable housing. Young professionals are having a difficult time saving up to own a house in Malaysia. Malaysia is home to a wide range of vacant lands, which should be seen as opportunities for higher quality of living through tiny living.

DA.KI is a design concept of living big in a small space made functional for two young professionals. Slender, slim and tall structures are soaring in the limited land available, vertical living proposes innovation to a country with ever growing urbanization and is implemented to reduce the building footprint, thus, creating more opportunities for multiple units to be built.

The construction of the tiny house is adapted from the traditional Malay house where it is elevated on stilts to capture wind and prevents flooding into the interior. Timber frames and composite timber panels are used as it is an affordable material and a good heat insulator in relation to the tropical climate in Malaysia. Additionally, rattan is used as the outer layer of the facade to signify the contextual relevance of the weaving culture. The use of locally sourced renewable materials is purposed to be beneficial in supporting the local economy.

As GFA is considered spaces within a building envelope in Malaysia, the circulatory stairs are designed to wrap the exterior envelope of the tiny house, as it creates more opportunities for functional spaces within. The vertical connection creates an in-between spatial experience between nature and architecture, embracing the richness of tropical nature in Malaysia. Storage spaces are integrated into functional areas such as floor storage in the living area and bedroom, and a storage integrated sliding door for the bath.

Through shifting horizontal planes, double and triple volume of spaces are created, reimagining the compact living of a tiny house. The spatial design allows for connectivity on all floors.

With the aid of modern technology, the tiny house incorporates various sustainable design strategies such as passive cooling, double façade system, hydroponics, and solar PV panels. The implementation of rainwater harvesting not only provides water for toilet, washing and laundry, it also supplies water to the hydroponic system.

DA.KI is designed to be energy efficient, which embraces nature with quality living in the tropical climate, significantly allowing the tiny home to adapt in any part of the country while being mindful towards the environmental and economical aspects.
