Tiny Incremental+

In some developing countries, slum residents constitute more than half of the population of a city. These conditions of homelessness and people inhabiting below the standard of living have been an unsolvable problem. After the exposure of Covid-19, these densely established informal settlements are most prone to infections. The design of the houses that annexed each other without proper air ventilation or enough sun exposure has caused the area to be highly unhygienic. Furthermore, using unstandardized toilets is one of the most dangerous activities for residents, especially for women and children. With the stated condition of health and sanitation, safety, and non-standardized housings types, our tiny house aimed to uplift the living standard of the people near the railway line of the Dhaka slum.
In most cases, Tiny houses are uses in the design of cottages, private vacation homes, or RV homes. However, looking at the advantage of going small, tiny house ideas with the condition of the slum area are used in the design of this model house. The project, Tiny Incremental+, started with the analysis of slums on railway lines in Dhaka. Mostly, the families in the area are of lower-income with 3-4 people per family. The housings built in the area are self-organized and personalized with the adaptative quality. A different household has various techniques in construction with available found materials. Additionally, the site has its uniqueness in its location that based next to the railway, offering business opportunities for these families. Also, with the area being in the tropical climate, the passive design strategies are applicable to the tiny house.
The design of Tiny Incremental+ is a single-family housing unit of three by five meters. The house is divided into three sections going from public to private activities. The first is the wet area of the toilet and bathroom which can be used both as a separated or joined room, and the second is the bedroom zone. The third area is the kitchen and living area, where the entrance or the public open is situated. Here, the zone can also be adapted for commercial. Overall, the design used available materials such as corrugated metal panels, shipping palettes, metal sheets, and waste vinyl cloth. It is easy to construct by the locals with simple construction techniques which most of the parts are connected with joinery and foldable design components. The additional bonus of this house is the use of tropical design strategies to utilize available natural resources to increase the tiny house performance. Lastly, our project intention is to design a tiny house standard model with conditions that would raise the standard of living for the people living in the incremental area.
