The memorial is sited in the heart of Dhaka city, next to the campus area of Dhaka University encircling an old tree; which fosters a deep connection between earth and heaven. This city has faced the hideous effects of COVID-19 pandemic. The corresponding cases till October,2020 are 409,252 where the death toll is 5943. 52% of the positive cases out of total cases in Bangladesh could be found only inside Dhaka. These factors led to the need of a memorial here.
People couldn’t even say goodbye for the last time because of the consequences. We have certainly lost our most loved ones. Grief is the last act of love we can offer. But still hope is the change.
The aim of a memorial ground is not only to recall the sorrow but to get over from it too. The basic form is generated from the deep dark pain of people. A cold dominant box is the symbol of that deeper inner feelings. Walking around the long dark walls will be suffocating like the hardship of losing someone. But then again while walking through the alley of darkness, a light of hope is the reason to move forward. The middle void of heavenly light is purposely inclined where an alone old tree is the witness of survival connecting between earth and heaven. Symbolizing resuscitation, it grants us the strength to revive. While sitting under the shade of hope, one might be able to rethink life without any disturbance of the outer world; he or she will find the place to have a glimpse of their starry family or friends. Sheltered by the branches of the old tree, the center space provides a contemplative space where people of all backgrounds and generations are welcomed to gather, pray, heal and reflect on the interconnections of life and death, water and earth, land and sky, past and future.
