The whites elefants are stadiums from the last Fifa World Cups in Russia, Brazil and South Africa. They are built for only few games and after that they are unused. Built for the World Cup 2014 in Brazil and now underused for local games with few hundreds spectators, we took the Arena-da-Amazonia in Manaus and tried to image how we reorganize a monofunctional, empty building like that. The sketch adopts the existing stadium structure as the basis for the development of a new urban district with the necessary commercial and social components. The project is so big that we have to integrate a new district with all uses of a city to avoid a new slum. The currently separate system in the shape of a plateau is opened the the surroundings in order to break up the character of a gated community.

Therefore, parts of the stands inside are removed and used as the new entrance to the district. Without the stands inside of the stadium, the space can be used for brand new buildings. Seen from the outside, only few modifications of the stadium seem obvious. For example the external wedges, which penetrate the old skin and are intended to expand the area on the second floor. The complex structures inside the stadium are used in a variety of new ways. At first glance, it is difficult to grasp the many newly created opportunities, which is precisely what makes the new stadium an interesting place. The sports areas are reduced to the current needs of the residents, preserving the original use of the stadium and extending it by further attractive offers. Integrating a large hotel, the project takes up the city´s economic focus on tourism and aims at attracting other businesses. The unique location in a stadium can make the hotel a tourist highlight.

The complex is to be built in different construction phases. Thus, not all residential buildings are developed at the same time. They are to be linked to the other uses such as the businesses, shopping facilities or the newly created jobs in general. the objective is to create a well. balanced mix of different functions. For the most part, the modifications are carried out using the main supporting structure and other existing structures of the stadium. The toothed beams in the upper tier enable the construction of residential buildings. Column-free rooms with larger spans, such as in the cinema, are also conceivable in the upper tier by extending the beams with large, rigid wall-panels. The support pillars in some areas in the lower floors must be reinforced due the to the increased additional load. Entirely new buildings are only created in the interior. The newly developed small townhouses are built on the former lower tier, where the stands can be removed without any problems as there is no basement underearth. These buildings create strong identification with the place and have the advantage that they can be modified and adapted to different economic and other situations.
